TRIBUTES have been paid to a community stalwart who has died.

David McGrath, former chairman of Culloden Community Council, and passionate community campaigner has passed away aged 73.

Mr McGrath was a formidable chairman who was a consistent campaigner for better service from Highland Council.

A spokesman for Culloden Community Council said: "We are sad to share the news that David McGrath, former chairman of Culloden Community Council has recently passed away.

"David was passionate about helping the community and helped highlight many local issues with the Highland Council.

"We send our condolences to Mrs McGrath and family.

Cllr Duncan MacPherson, Inverness South ward, said: "David McGrath was a committed community councillor and he chaired Culloden Community Council during the time when I was chairman of the neighbouring Cradlehall and Westhill Community Council up until may 2017, when I was elected to Highland Council.

"He was a dedicated community campaigner, despite his disabilities and poor health, he could often be seen in the press highlighting abandoned vehicles, along with expressing his annoyance at acts of wilful damage to property by vandalism and graffiti.

"He campaigned for better facilities for residents and like myself, he was opposed to the closure by Police Scotland of the Culloden Community Police Station in 2016.

"Sending condolences to David’s wife Johan, to all his family, and to his former work colleagues in the licensed trade and to his Culloden Community Council colleagues and also to his many friends at this sad time."

A funeral notice, posted by D.Chisholm and Sons, said: "Peacefully at Raigmore Hospital, Inverness on October 27 2021, David McGrath, aged 73 years, Galloway Drive, Culloden (chairman, Culloden Community Council), beloved husband of Johan, also a dear dad, grandad, brother and uncle.

"Funeral ceremony on Tuesday November 9 2021 at noon in Inverness Crematorium."
