Morag McGilvray and Joan Mackenzie, from Inverness, took to the skies to buy a special bed for Highland Hospice.

The money will be used to buy a cuddle bed – which is larger than a normal hospital bed and allows relatives to be closer to patients being cared for at the centre.

Earlier this month Mrs McGilvray, together with her mother Donella Scott, visited the Inverness hospice to see a demo version of the bed.

Her late father, Tom Scott, was cared for at the facility before he passed away at the age of 64 in June and she wanted to raise the money to say thank you.

She said it was amazing to see the equipment and her mother was quite emotional during her first visit to the centre since June.

She added: “She was in tears, she was totally overcome, that was the first time we’d been back – it was really hard. Other people are going to get the benefit from the money we raised.”

The hospice has been running a Give a Cuddle this Christmas fundraising campaign and it was given the demonstration bed to try out.

A spokeswoman said: “It’s an incredible piece of kit, with lots of additional features to improve the comfort of our patients and assist staff with the care they provide.

“The extra width of the cuddle bed will also be a huge help to patients and their families.

“Morag organised a sponsored wing walk that raised an incredible amount for our appeal. They were delighted to see that the money they raised will benefit so many people.

“Thanks to everyone who contributed towards our Give a Cuddle this Christmas campaign – your support will make all the difference to our patients and their families.”
