A TRADITIONAL Scottish dancing group has been celebrating its 70th anniversary in style.

The Inverness and District branch of the Royal Scottish Country Dancing Society (RSCDS) marked its 70th anniversary with two big celebratory evenings, one for the general public and another for members only.

Marlene Munro, chairwoman of the Inverness branch of the society, said: “It was an excellent evening. It’s great fun and great exercise for the brain and body.”

The milestone was marked with a ceilidh in the Inverness Town House, which followed celebrations in Cauldeen Primary.

The private event at the town house saw at least 80 of the 105 members of the Inverness and District branch of the Society come together to dance and celebrate the big anniversary.

Inverness councillor Duncan Macpherson also attended the event in a civic capacity, and said it was a very enjoyable evening for all.

“It was super," he said. "People came from all over the region and it really was a gathering of friends.”

The Inverness and District branch welcomed the president of RSCDS Jean Marin who opened the evening with a speech.

Mrs Munro and Councillor Macpherson also spoke to the society which was then replied to by club member Derek Darnell with a thank you on behalf of the branch.

A special award was also presented to Liz Mackenzie who has been a member of the society for more than 40 years.

Local musicians Suzie Simpson and Jock Fraser performed on accordion and keyboard.

A special anniversary cake was cut by the honorary club president Lilian Meiklejohn with Ms Martin and all of the club members were given a commemorative mug.
