A leading Highland councillor has appealed to Highland Council officers to pull out all the stops to get a school reopened before Christmas holidays begin next week, after the building was seriously damaged in the wind overnight.

Cllr Bet McAllister, Inverness Central ward, says it would be a 'festive blow' to children if their Christmas parties can not go ahead this year.

In a statement, Cllr McAllister said: "It’s sad and unfortunate that the roof of Dalneigh Primary has been damaged by the high winds.

“After being alerted by a parent, I spoke to head teacher Rona McCormack who told me that Primaries 1 to 3 are carrying on as normal but the part of the building housing older pupils has been affected, which is why they had to stay at home.

“This is the week when the class Christmas parties are due to be held and it would be a festive blow to the children if these were cancelled.

“I’ve spoken to council officials and workmen are carrying out an assessment to see what can be done and when. We need to get pupils back to school before the holidays.

“It’s a huge relief that the damage was caused at night and there were no children there when it occurred.”
