The National Trust for Scotland, the conservation charity which manages the internationally important site near to Inverness, is creating an exhibition which will open during Culloden’s 277th anniversary week in April 2023.

The team at Culloden want to hear from anybody who can share stories, memories,

connections, artefacts and photographs of the famous battlefield and visitor centre over the years.

They are particularly keen to hear from individuals with a special memory of the site or those who have a family or other connection to Culloden Battlefield, photographs or memorabilia.

Others may have forged a friendship there, or been inspired to write a story connected to Culloden or study the history.

The team is also keen to hear people’s experiences of two buildings on the site – the former visitor centre and old Leanach Cottage from when it acted as Culloden’s only museum.

Those interested have until January 15 to get in touch with the team by emailing culloden300@nts.org.uk, or coming along in person to a Community Thank You Day at Culloden on November 26 and 27 from 10 am to 2 pm to share stories over a cup of tea.

Gail Cleaver, Operations Manager at Culloden Battlefield, said: “Culloden Battlefield is a very special site which so many people have enjoyed visiting over the years to learn more about Highland and Scottish history.

“We think the exhibition will be a lovely way of involving people in 277th anniversary events and to hear how special it is to them. It will contribute to the Trust’s vision to deliver nature, beauty, heritage for everyone by engaging with audiences and encouraging them to connect with our historic properties and wider conservation work.

“I’m sure people will come up with fantastic photographs, memories and stories of

Culloden which will be super to share with others. We can’t wait to see what we receive!”

Culloden Battlefield has been in the care of the National Trust for Scotland for 80 years and

commemorates the last pitched battle on British soil, when the Jacobite forces loyal to Bonnie Prince Charlie were defeated by Duke of Cumberland’s troops in April 1746.
