Highland Council says a range of projects will help deliver both service improvements and savings.

The most prominent of the four is the council-owned and run bus company to cut costs after it was felt that the local authority was being held to “ransom” over contracts, particularly for school services.

A roads improvement project aims to redesign the service where necessary and deliver improvements for the effective, efficient, and sustainable delivery of all engineering and roads operations and improve road condition across the Highlands.

The Asset Management Project is targeting a £1 million reduction in the council’s office estate to reduce costs, energy use and carbon footprint while modernising the working environment.

Finally, the connected customer and digitisation project is to review, improve and create a joined-up customer contact experience at Highland Council. The ambition is to use digital approaches to support improved outcomes for people, staff and the council.

Council convener and redesign board chairman Councillor Bill Lobban said: “These are important redesign projects which will deliver significant service improvement and savings.

“The redesign board will continue to be responsive to the key opportunities, priorities and challenges for the Council, as well as supporting our key strategies to address the ongoing financial crisis and the impact on our communities.”
