More on cost of living crisis

"This is yet another devastating blow for households across the Highlands, especially when they are already paying more than households in other areas of the UK," Mr Hendry said.

"This situation cannot go on.

"Those hardest hit are facing a choice of starving or freezing this winter.

"The utter shambles that is the Tory party leadership election is taking precedence over the cost-of-living crisis, with the sitting Prime Minister and his would-be successors sitting on their hands.

"We need action now including an emergency budget, a price cap freeze and a social tariff to ensure the most vulnerable households are protected."
