Construction scheme set to boost careers

Nine young people from the Highlands have taken their first steps towards a career in the construction industry.

The youngsters were given the opportunity to take on a number of courses and placements over a three-week period as part of the Journey into Construction initiative.

The scheme is being led by Developing the Young Workforce (DYW), construction firm Robertson and SPW Management Solutions.

The first stage of the programme saw the participants complete courses in health and safety, emergency first aid and manual handling skills.

That was followed by employability skills sessions and two-week placements with Robertson.

All of the participants were awarded CSCS cards at the end of the programme, providing proof that they have received training and qualifications in the type of work they carry out.

DYW Inverness and Central Highland’s programme director Andy Maxtone said: “This is the second iteration of the Journey into Construction scheme, having successfully carried it out for local school pupils last year.

“The certifications the participants will gain means they can go and work on a construction site straight away, without the employer having to put them through training – which would usually be the case – providing young people with a unique selling point from which to launch their careers.”

Robertson’s regional engagement co-ordinator Jade O’Hara added: “We are passionate about youth employment because we appreciate they are essential to the future success of Robertson and Scotland’s growing economy.

“The construction industry is facing a skills shortage and it is essential we educate our young people about the rewarding careers available to them in our industry.

“I hope those involved leave feeling confident and better equipped as they progress their careers.”
