Police were called after the man got in his vehicle and drove off.

Staff at a Nairn shop were concerned when a customer who appeared to be intoxicated bought a half bottle of vodka whilst holding his car keys.

Inverness Sheriff Court heard that staff at the Scotmid store said to 76-year-old David McKay, of Lawrie Drive, Nairn they hoped he wasn't going to drive.

But McKay got into his vehicle and drove off. Police were informed and McKay was stopped in Dulnain Street on April 10, 2023.

He was arrested and a subsequent blood sample showed he was over four times the legal drink-drive limit.

His reading was 215mcgs of alcohol when the limit is 50mcgs.

Defending, Marc Dickson said: "It was a significant error of judgement."

Sheriff Ian Cruickshank fined McKay £840 and banned him from driving for a year.
