A former compound near Fort Augustus could be converted into a new campsite if the proposal gets planning permission.

Archie Maclellan has applied to Highland Council to build the facility, which would also have a shop, café building, shower and toilet blocks, parking and access, in Invergarry.

The site is the former Balfour Beatty compound in Glenmor and is 350m north of Newtown Invergarry.

According to a design statement, which forms part of the application, since 2011 the site was used during the construction of the Beauly to Denny power line.

It is hoped that the site could accommodate up to 46 mobile campers with 67 car parking spaces in an area of 1.87 hectares.

A spokesman said: “The applicant hopes that they can attract further customers to visit the Highlands and stay longer, which hopefully in turn supports our local communities in the coming months and years as this is vital to our economy.

“The applicant hopes to be in a position to offer further employment in the area.”
