A COMMUNITY will come together to celebrate its heritage and folklore in a new Halloween event.

The Auldearn Samhain Gathering ("samhain" is Gaelic word, literally meaning "summer's end") will feature musicians, singers, writers and storytellers all lined up to entertain.

Participants are also invited to bring turnip lanterns and don their best costumes for the guising competition for both children and adults – home-made costumes only though.

Local artist Helen Wright was inspired to organise the event by her own interest in local heritage, particularly Auldearn's place in the world of 17th century witchcraft trials.

She said: "Most people don't know it but Auldearn is one of Scotland's most important places for the history of witchcraft.

"I am very passionate about it, it's really fascinating

"This is a wonderful occasion to raise awareness of the stories and folklore and history of the village, and a great moment for everyone to get together."

Ms Wright is the artist behind a popular mural in the village illustrating the story of Isobel Gowdie, the Witch of Auldearn.

"When we first unveiled the mural to the public in 2021, I thought it would be great to invite the whole community and make an event of it on Halloween. It was so good that we thought it would be great to make it an annual event," she said.

The mural is just opposite of Helen's kitchen and she added: "I get a lot of interest for it, many passers-by ask about the story behind it.

"I thought it was important to have something to remember Isobel, as in the village the only other mark showing she had ever existed is in the village churchyard."

A community council spokesperson shared on social media: "Big thanks to Helen Wright for arranging a fun packed event – be sure to spread the word to any ghouls or spooks in your life!"

Food and soft drinks will be provided by the 1645 Inn on the night.

The Auldearn Samhain Gathering will take place on Tuesday, October 31 from 5-7pm at Lethen Hall and the Rose Garden Green in Auldearn.
