A manhole cover has collapsed on the A96 Inverness-Nairn road near Ardersier leaving a hole in the road.

Traffic lights are in place and the road is down to a single lane.

The lights will remain in place tomorrow (Saturday) and will stay up until the road re-sets.

The work is being carried out by Openreach which has BT service cables underneath the manhole.

A spokeswoman said no services were affected but the road surface was obviously a danger for motorists.

She said: "We’re sorry for any traffic delays which result from this essential work to keep road users and their vehicles safe.

"We’d advise people to check travel routes and allow extra time for journeys, particularly if they’re travelling to the airport."
