A father and his two young sons were led to safety by coastguard when their speedboat ran aground on a sandbank in choppy seas off Nairn's East Beach this afternoon.

The incident was witnessed by onlookers who alerted the rescue services at about 1pm.

The family were well equipped and sat it out in the boat on the sandback as the tide was on the ebb.

Coastguards using a safety line waded out to the sandbank and carried the youngsters back to safety on the shoreline. Moray Inshore Rescue Association attended on the scene and stood by but their services were not required. The speedboat was towed to the harbour by coastguards.

The boat owner and children did not require any hospital treatment.
