SPRING tides and gale force winds have sparked warnings of possible coastal flooding on the Nairnshire and Moray coast.

The Scottish Environment Protection Agency (Sepa) issued the alert, and dozens of other flood warnings, this afternoon after the Met Office issued a yellow warning for storm force winds on Wednesday.

The flood alert covers Sepa's "Findhorn, Nairn, Moray and Speyside" river warning zone.

A spokesperson said: "This alert is for coastal flooding. Due to a combination of large surge and spring tides, there is a risk of some localised coastal flooding to low-lying coastal areas on Wednesday and Thursday and there may be some disruption to travel.

"The risk is greatest around the times of high tides on Wednesday morning which is around 1pm GMT at Lossiemouth.

"Remain vigilant and remember, it is your responsibility to take actions which help protect yourself and your property. Advice and information is also available through Floodline on 0345 9881188."

Elsewhere in the Highlands, Sepa has also issued coastal flood alerts for Wester Ross and the Skye and Lochaber area.

Heightened flood warnings have also been issued for Fort William and Corpach.

Sepa's rolling alert scale rises from "flood alert" level, to "flood warning", and then up to "severe flood warning".

People can sign up for free text flood alerts for their areas by registering for Sepa's Floodline direct warning service. To receive them call Floodline or register online at sepa.org.uk/floodingsignup.

The Met Office's yellow warning for gale force winds runs from 4am on Wednesday until 1pm the same day.
