A STREET cleaner who used his own savings to bring a bit of fun to children during the coronavirus lockdown has made his final delivery of colouring books and craft packs.

Martin Macdougall (54), from Merkinch, decided to use his own holiday money to bring a smile to the faces of hundreds of children, after seeing how his own nephews were struggling for something to do during the lockdown.

Inspiring others across the region to donate towards the cause Mr Macdougall has now delivered more than 600 packs to children.

“It has just been so unbelievable and, at times, a bit emotional hearing peoples’ stories and how I made the kids smile,” he said.

“It makes me proud of myself to know I’ve put a smile on more than 600 kids’ faces.

“It is really unbelievable.”

Thanking everyone who has assisted with the effort he added: “So many people have helped me with donations, books and helping me get them delivered.

“I want to thank every single one of them for making it possible.”

He also gave a special mention to friend Barry Duncan.

He said: “If wasn’t for Barry – and Bruno the dog – a lot of my books would not have been delivered.

“He delivered all books outside the city centre so was a big help for me.”
