CLARE HUMPHREYS: Navigating the challenges of mental health
Clare Humphreys, owner of Will-to-Win discusses how she can provide tools to help mental health through self-improvement and personal growth.
In the current landscape, facing the challenges of mental health has become increasingly daunting and tough!
It’s reported about one in four people experience mental health problems in any given year, a recent report showed that Scotland is in the grips of a mental health epidemic and the need for comprehensive support is crucial as:
- 30% of adults in Scotland with feelings of anxiety say they are not coping well.
- 44% of adults in Scotland with feelings of anxiety say they keep it a secret.
- 70% of adults in Scotland felt anxious in the previous two weeks.
And what about in the workplace?
The workplace is not exempt from this crisis, with official data indicating that 35.2 million working days were lost to work-related ill health in 2022/23, with stress, anxiety and depression accounting for almost 24 million of these.
These distressing statistics underscore the urgency of addressing mental health issues and highlight the necessity of proactive measures.
The question arises: what can be done to address this crisis?
CIPD research shows that employee sickness absence is at the highest level reported for 15 years and around three-quarters of respondents (76%) report some stress-related absence. Over two-thirds of respondents report that senior leaders take wellbeing seriously. However, lack of line manager skills and confidence is the top challenge for employee wellbeing and ‘management style’ remains among the top causes of stress related absence.
In addition to this many people continue to work when unwell, even if they are working from home, while many employees even use holiday or sick leave to work.
These statistics I am sure you will agree are shocking and I am on a personal mission to help and enable the support and practical tools to impact a person’s mental health through self-improvement and personal growth!
So what can be done?
I agree with the CIPD commendations for employers:
• Ensure that senior leaders are aware of the importance of workplace health and wellbeing, and that they embed actions to ensure that it’s taken seriously across the organisation.
• Train line managers to manage people well. Line managers are key to employee wellbeing and should ensure people’s workloads and deadlines are manageable.
While it’s clear that more needs to be done to improve access to treatment, it doesn’t mean people inevitably have to struggle with their mental health as a result. In fact, there are many things people can do on their own to maintain good mental health and even prevent mental health problems from developing in the first place. According to research one of the steps you can take to improve your mental wellbeing may be as simple as believing that you can!
So what now?
So while it’s most beneficial to take steps to improve your mental health, even just believing that you can improve is associated with better overall mental wellbeing.

So what’s covered?
Here is a snapshot of what we will be covering and enabling you to take charge of your mental wellbeing:
Module 1: What Is Mental Health?
We start the session by checking our understanding of mental health against the research literature. You get a strong sense of the warning signs of poor mental health, and what good mental health looks like.
Module 2: Support Your Brain Health To Support Your Mental Health
Mental and physical health are so closely intertwined that it is hard to separate them. The most foundational element of good mental health is good brain health. This module investigates why you need a healthy brain, and how you can go about supporting brain health.
Module 3: Psychological Well-Being
In addition to your brain health, mental health is influenced by your psychological well-being. Psychological well-being has three elements: hedonic well-being, eudaimonic well-being, and resilience. I will show you how to use these elements.
Module 4: The Science of Emotional Regulation
Good mental health is strongly correlated with good emotional regulation. Emotional regulation is a key component of hedonic well-being.
Module 5: Change Your Stress Mindset By Rethinking What You Know About Stress
By understanding the physiology of your stress response, you can:
• Change your stress mindset
• Improve your stress response growth index
• Choose the stress response that is most appropriate for the situation
Module 6: Finding Meaning In Life
Meaning and purpose have a big influence on your well-being. By examining your purpose and values, you can:
• Feel that your life has meaning
• Increase your sense of competence, control, or autonomy
• Increase your self-acceptance and personal expressiveness
• Rethink stress in your life
Module 7: Maintaining Good Mental Health by Building Resilience
Resilience is the ability to withstand adversity and bounce back from difficult life events. It promotes a process of positive adaptation in the face of challenging circumstances while maintaining mental health. By building resilience, you can maintain a good level of well-being. Being resilient also helps you to live into your values and purpose.
Module 8: How Do I Know if My Mental Health Is Improving?
The activities we will use in this session give you a clear indication of where your mental health is right now. This module considers some of the ways you can measure whether your mental health is indeed improving over time.
