Fast growing Inverness (pop 46,000 in 2022) has only one full-time post office remaining in the west side of the city.

The situation was described as "outrageous considering the growth up here" by a local man who highlighted that now that Kinmylies has ceased trading the only permanent post office west of the River Ness is the Merkinch PO in Grant Street.

Over the years, Dalneigh and Montague Row have closed along with Greig Street, Torvean Avenue, Telford Street (at Muirtown Bridge), Leachkin Road, and before that Tomnahurich Street.

A Post Office spokesperson said: “We want to restore Post Office service to the Kinmylies area, however, at this stage there is no interested retailer.

"We have advertised the vacancy and our field team has visited the area on a few occasions.

“After the resignation of the operator at Montague Row we introduced a Mobile Post Office for Dalneigh which provides service to the community on a Wednesday afternoon.

“Other Post Offices in the city area include Merkinch, Inverness city centre, Crown, Drumblair and Inshes.”

On a brighter note the spokesperson added: “We do have good news to share for Culduthel, in south Inverness. We are currently finalising plans to open a brand-new branch."

The spokesperson added details would be released soon.

Only around one per cent of post offices are Crown post offices, which are directly managed by Post Office Ltd. The vast majority, around 99 per cent, are operated by franchise partners or sub-postmasters, who are independent business people.
