An Inverness church minister who took part in the London Marathon has raised more than £3000 for a charity which helps to empower young wheelchair users.

Rev James Bissett, of Old High St Stephen’s Church, was inspired to raise funds for UK charity Whizz-Kidz after his wife – also a church minister – had to borrow a wheelchair after breaking her ankle.

It was the first “proper” marathon for the 46-year-old minister who earlier this year suffered from long Covid, resulting in one of his lungs partially deflating.

Mr Bissett, who set a fundraising target of £2500, said his marathon run had been a success.

“I am very happy with my six hours 55 minutes time,” he said.

Mr Bissett, who is married to Susan Cord, minister of Killearnan and Knockbain Church of Scotland, described the wheelchair she had to borrow as a seat with wheels which barely gave her any independence.

As a result of her experience, he wanted to support the charity which helps young people get around independently with wheelchairs which were right for them.
