A Highland choir will be performing a fundraising concert in Inverness this month to raise cash for Ukraine.

Acclaim will be performing in the Free North Church, in Bank Street, on June 25 at 7.30pm in aid of Children’s Ministry Ukraine.

The group puts on concerts twice a year raising funds for charity and this will be their first large concert since before the pandemic – their last appearance was when they sang carols in the Eastgate Shopping Centre last December.

Choir director Elaine Kirkham said: “Over recent years, as our audiences have increased, we have used the Free North Church as a venue since it can hold a large audience and has enough space at the front for the choir and musicians. Attendance at concerts has been as high as 800.”

She said they had chosen Children’s Ministry Ukraine because it was a charity which had been running for several years and it was initiated and supported by a local couple who spent a number of years working in Ukraine.

“Simeon and Joanna Ewing are members at Hilton Church, and, since the war in Ukraine broke out, they have returned to Ukraine on at least two occasions to assist with the ongoing work in supporting refugee children and families,” she added. “We will be showing a short video during the concert highlighting some of the work of this charity.

“Given the war in Ukraine, we were keen to support a charity which is involved in supporting the people directly affected.

“We considered a number of national and international charities, but, given the local nature of the origins of Children’s Ministry Ukraine, we felt it appropriate to support this cause.”

Mrs Kirkham, who is 66 years old and lives in Inverness, said the group was first formed 10 years ago when she was asked to form a choir to join Keith and Kristyn Getty in a concert at Eden Court Theatre.
