A man told his partner he would stab her in her sleep Inverness Sheriff Court heard.

Depute fiscal Roderick Urquhart told Sheriff David Sutherland that on March 18 Liam Hay (24) and his partner had argued at their home in Berneray Court, Inverness, before struggling with each other.

“A neighbour heard the disturbance and intervened and pulled the accused outside,” he said.

The next incident happened on June 27 when Hay became annoyed at a comment his partner had made about a celebrity being attractive.

An argument followed and Hay punched a wall.

He also threatened to stab the woman in her sleep.

Inverness Sheriff Court heard the couple had been together for 10 years but their relationship had now broken down.

Hay later told police: “I was angry and I sometimes say stupid things when I’m angry.”

Clare Russell, defending, said Hay’s behaviour was a result of experiences in his childhood.

Sheriff Sutherland placed him on 12 months supervision and ordered him to attend a programme for violence and relationships.
