A 51-year-old chef and his estranged wife have been given a chance by a sheriff to take the heat out of their strained relationship.

Samimur Rahman, of Fairlie View, Beauly had an argument with his spouse in their home on September 24, 2021 and he has been banned from seeing her by bail conditions since then.

But Inverness Sheriff Court heard that she requested a non-harassment order (NHO) be imposed on her husband of 10 years, who admitted assaulting her by pushing her.

Police officers were called to their home following a report of a disturbance and found the woman upset and in a distressed state.

Sheriff Robert Frazer heard that Rahman’s reply on being charged was: “She pushed me so I pushed her.”

Defence solicitor Clare Russell told the court: “He accepts two wrongs don’t make a right and is unsure about the relationship because he hasn’t been able to talk to her due to bail conditions.”

On hearing that father-of-two Rahman’s wife was in favour of an NHO, Sheriff Frazer told him: “You appear in court as someone with no previous convictions and there appears to be something of a background.

“I will defer sentence for six months for your good behaviour to ensure that there is no repetition of this sort of thing.

“I will also revoke bail, ordain you to appear on September 15 and I strongly suggest you take legal advice. I will also continue consideration of the NHO request until then.

“Hopefully this will allow the situation between you and your wife to cool down.”
