Staff at an Inverness restaurant and takeaway are in mourning after a popular member of staff collapsed and died at work.

An ambulance was called to Saffron in Cradlehall shortly after 3.45pm on Wednesday and despite the efforts of colleagues, paramedics and the pharmacist at Cradlehall Pharmacy, the 49-year-old chef could not be saved.

He has been named locally as Krzysztof Marchlinski, from Alness.

Mr Marchlinski had been with Saffron’s owners for the last 10 years, firstly in the company’s Dingwall restaurant, and then when it closed after a fire, he moved to work in Cradlehall.

Emergency services were called to Cradlehall Court as soon as the chef became unwell.

Inverness South councillor Duncan Macpherson, who was at the scene, said: “My sincere condolences go to Mr Machlinski’s family and friends.

“I understand Mr Marchlinski was a family man, and earlier in the day his family had been into the restaurant to see their dad.

“The whole community at Cradlehall came together to support the staff of Saffron. Thanks go to the emergency services and to pharmacist Mo Ameen, who used the community council-funded defibrillator to try and help resuscitate Mr Marchlinski.

“Mr Ameen used the defibrillator until the ambulance personnel arrived but sadly he could not be saved. While the area was cordoned off, the police kindly gave consent for Mr Marchlinski, a Christian, to be attended to by the local priest Father Domenico Zanré.”

Police confirmed that a 49-year-old man had died, saying there were no suspicious circumstances. A report has been made to the procurator fiscal.

Saffron will be closed until further notice.

A spokesman for the business said: “It is with great sadness we announce our friend and work colleague of 10 years has passed away.

“He was a pillar of Saffron. Everyone who works in Saffron are like family, so this has come as a great shock for us.

“During this time we would be grateful for time and space to allow our staff and family to grieve.”
