MALCOLM MacSween, who works for charity Befrienders Highland, is going to run the Loch Ness Ultra Marathon this weekend to raise funds for the charity.

Mr MacSween joined Befrienders in 2015 as a volunteer and became a staff member in 2019.

On Saturday, he will take on the challenge tackling 80 miles around Loch Ness.

This is Mr MacSween's first ultra marathon, which he said has his stomach turning in knots when he thinks abou tit.

He continued: "I am dedicating this challenge to Befrienders Highland, a small charity that makes a big difference in the battle against loneliness and isolation within the Highlands.

"Since working there, I have really seen the impact that isolation can have on our mental health and it has highlighted to me the importance of being connected. Having meaningful connections with trustworthy people can play a major role in mental health recovery and maintenance."

He runs the charity's weekly walking group and previously ran a fitness group to support people's mental and physical health.

Susan White, chief executive of Befrienders Highland, added: "We are all amazed that, despite injury, Malcolm is determined to compete and raise as much as he possibly can for the charity. He would love to raise £10 for each mile of the run, so if you can support him, please donate through his fundraising page.

"Some of our friends, staff and volunteers will be volunteering along the route to cheer on Malcolm and other participants in the event.”

He has already raised £550 of his £800 target.
