A special football match to honour the life of an Inverness man and also raise money for a local charity will take place this weekend.

The annual Shaun Scullion Memorial Match resumes after a two-year absence due to the Covid pandemic.

This year marks the 14th annual event held in memory of Shaun Scullion (20), of Kinmylies, who died in 2006 from an aneurysm.

Following his death his friends, Steven Corcoran, Jamie Kilpatrick and James Duncan, as well as his family, have held an annual football match in his memory which has raised thousands of pounds for local charities.

Members of his family will take part in the game, including his cousin Liam who is travelling from England especially to take part in the match.

Shaun’s mum Morag, who lives in Suilven Way with her husband Mervyn, explained: “We are looking forward to another football match as we’ve really missed it during the last two years.

"We are very grateful to everyone who is taking part as well as everyone who has helped to organise the event and donated to our raffle.

“I know how pleased Shaun would be to know that the annual football match is returning in his name as it is such a fitting tribute.

“We are also delighted that it will raise money for a very deserving charity, which does tremendous work in our local community.”

The family chose the Charleston Community Foundation, which aims to assist people under the age of 18 living in the Kinmylies, Muirtown and Scorguie areas of Inverness, to benefit, as it supports disadvantaged families in the area that Shaun and his friends grew up in.

Around £15,000 has been raised for local charities in the Inverness area in Shaun’s name over the past 15 years.

The day before he died, former swimming instructor and well known ice hockey player, Shaun had started a new job in the advertising department of the Highland News. He asked to go home shortly after arriving for work on his second day and died a short time later.

The match takes place on Saturday (August 13) at the Charleston Community Complex at 1pm.
