Charity duathlon prizes created by prisoners

ORGANISERS of the Highland Cross race have teamed up with a local charity to provide the prizes for Saturday’s event.
The awards have been created by the Libertie project, which arranges art and crafts workshops to help offenders’ rehabilitation.
The charity have provided several ceramic plates, hand-painted by inmates, which will be presented to the various winners at the event.
The iniative is being held in conjunction with the event’s main backer Hawco VW.
Highland Cross organiser Calum Munro said: "We saw the Libertie project’s work and we were very impressed with it.
"For years there have been some very good prize suppliers to the race but they were all commercial firms.
"The Highland Cross is a community collaboration. We were looking for something to express that and when the charity came along it just seemed to fit.
"We wanted to give it a go, and we are delighted with the results.
"A community embodies everyone, and even the people at Libertie have spent time in prison for whatever reason, they are part of the Highland community.
"They are trying to better their lives and we are trying to give them a chance.
"Their involvement this year is just about the prizes, but what tends to happen is that groups then get involved again."
