Business body CBI Scotland has welcomed First Minister Nicola Sturgeon's commitment to mass coronavirus testing, but says government must ensure it has the capacity to meet demand.

Tracy Black, CBI Scotland director Tracy Black said: “Firms will be reassured to hear the First Minister’s commitment to working with the UK Government on mass testing. Increasing capacity is precisely what is needed to build confidence for the public and businesses before a vaccine becomes available.

“Business welcomes the introduction of the new Protect Scotland app, yet it must be matched by further improvements to existing testing capability across Scotland. Meanwhile, with infection rates rising, caution at this stage makes sense.

“Firms are working hard to follow Scottish Government guidance, keeping workplaces, pubs and shops as safe as they can for staff and customers.

“Many businesses are still scrambling to survive following the initial impact of Covid-19 and will need targeted support from the Scottish and UK government to get through the autumn.

“A successor to the job retention scheme and allowing businesses to defer VAT for the second quarter are two effective ways to protect jobs and livelihoods.”
