A MYSTERIOUS car found dumped in the Caledonian Canal when a passing boat's propeller snagged a tyre may have been there for "some time", Scottish Canals believes.

The vehicle, a red L-reg Vauxhall Cavalier with a turbo-diesel engine, was found in the water at the Muirtown Locks in Inverness on Monday, It was lifted out by crane this morning after work by police divers to investigate the site.

The car, whose full registration is L139 JSA, is understood to be almost 22 years old. It is not clear how long it may have been in the water.

But Scottish Canals, which operates the canal, said the amount of silt around the car suggested it had been in the water for a while.

A spokesperson for Scottish Canals said: “A car was discovered on the bed of the Caledonian Canal at Muirtown Locks by divers performing an inspection of a vessel’s propeller.

“The level of siltation around the vehicle, which suggests that it has been in the canal for some time, prevented the divers from seeing within the car.

“The incident has been reported to Police Scotland."

The police said they were still conducting enquiries at the time of writing.
