A candlelit vigil for Sarah Everard planned for 6pm this evening in Inverness has been cancelled.

Organiser Penny Deverell made the decision after almost all the other vigils planned around the UK were also called off.

Numerous vigils across the UK were arranged after a huge outpouring from women who said the disappearance and death of the 33 year old struck a profound chord.

Instead, Ms Deverell called on people to everyone to "tie a message, a story, your feelings" to the Ness Bridge.

Serving police officer Wayne Couzens has appeared in court charged with the kidnap and murder of Sarah Everard, her remains were found in woodland in Kent.

Ms Deverell underlined that Highland police had been “fantastic” and there were “myriad” reasons for the gathering not going ahead.

She said: “So the gathering tonight has been cancelled, following on from the cancellation of almost all other vigils across the UK.

“I just want to state here – it had nothing to do with the police, they have been fantastic. This was a decision taken by me for myriad reasons.

“However, there is an alternative. Much like the excellent action Catherine Duncan planned last year for BLM to work round restrictions – I'm asking everyone to tie a message, a story, your feelings to the Ness Bridge.

“I will collect all of these tomorrow and hopefully something beautiful can be made out of them. And thank you so, so much for your support.”
