An exciting new community facility beside the Caledonian Canal at the Carse of Inverness, has held its first open day.

Working with a range of partners Scottish Canals delivered the £4.5 million Treehouse located between Carse Industrial Estate and the canal.

The building will allow a number of organisations to come together under one roof to provide a space for offices, workshops, volunteering and community groups for those living around the South Kessock, Merkinch, Scorguie and Dalneigh areas of the city.

The open day held on Tuesday July 20 was organised by the South Kessock & Merkinch Community Action Group which is a sub-group of the Inverness Community Partnership.

There are four sub-group’s in Inverness whose remit it is to undertake activity to improve the quality of life for people living in that particular community, using knowledge and experience to influence priorities and help determine solutions.

Chief Insp Hill said: "The South Kessock & Merkinch Community Action Group are currently refreshing it’s Action Plan and we are very keen to work more closely with the community to really understand what the important issues are and how we can support them to make a difference.

"It needs to be a plan that is owned by the community and delivered with them.

"This event was a starting point for us, to meet with families from the South Kessock & Merkinch Community, to have some fun and to start some new conversations about how the group should move forward."

Chief Insp Hill had a long list to thank for assistance.

She said: "We are incredibly grateful to Merkinch Primary School for bringing along their wonderful singers to perform, to Rokzskool for supporting the planning of the event and for entertaining the crowd with some brilliant music, to Highland Third Sector Interface for supporting the engagement work and fun activities.

"Also a massive thank you to Youth Highland, The Clay Studio, Merkinch Family Centre, Highlife Highland, Scottish Fire & Rescue Service, Police Scotland colleagues and everyone who supported the event.

"It was a great opportunity to promote this new community space on the edge of the Caledonian Canal."

Highland Council and Police Scotland funded the event with Scottish Canals and Waterways kindly allowing the use of their new Treehouse.

The Treehouse project, which also included towpath and greenspace improvements in and around the area, was made possible by funding partners; Sustrans Scotland’s Places for Everyone programme backed by Transport Scotland, the Highland Council, the Scottish Government and European Regional Development Fund (ERDF)/Nature Scot.
