Canal walkers generate £8000 windfall

THOUSANDS of pounds has been raised for an Alzheimers charity’s work in the Highlands after more than 100 people took to the banks of the Caledonian Canal for a fundraising hike.
The annual Alzheimer Scotland Memory Walk set off from Dochgarroch with the Northern Constabulary Pipe Band piping the walkers on their way.
Those taking part were also treated to lots of refreshments at Torvean Golf Club where children were able to have their faces painted and enjoyed a visit from "Mrs" Bubbles the Clown with her balloon modelling skills. Those who felt particularly energetic then walked back to Dochgarroch.
Elma MacKay, community fundraiser from Alzheimer Scotland, said: "What a great day we had at this year’s Memory Walk. Many families came along to raise both funds and awareness for people living with dementia, while all the time remembering their loved one who has, or had lived with the illness.
"One little girl even gave up her cinema trip to come along and walk for her grandad who is living with the illness.
"A huge thank to the Northern Constabulary Pipe Band for their beautiful piping, Torvean Golf Club for their hospitality, Mrs Bubbles for her creativity and Tesco for providing us with lots of pancakes and cakes to help us replenish the energy of our walkers, the participants themselves, and also all the volunteers who gave up their Saturday.
"Thank you also to Curves Fitness Club who closed the club early on Saturday so some of the ladies could come and walk. We hope to raise in the region of £8000 to support people living with dementia, their friends and families in the Highlands, we couldn’t do it without you all, so thank you."
The charity’s Memory Walk series saw 15 hikes take place at locations across Scotland last month. Many families had the chance to pay tribute to someone special who is living with dementia, or who has passed away.
