A businessman is looking for support to help Ukrainian refugees who are fleeing their homeland and seeking refuge in Poland.

Thomas Machnik runs Inverness cleaning and facilities management company Te-aM and is calling for other Highland businesses and residents to get involved in the relief effort.

He is particularly keen to hear from haulage companies, hospitals, supermarkets, outdoor shops, schools, pharmacies, sports clubs, medical practices, hotels, dental practices, restaurants, pubs and takeaways.

He is also seeking supplies of large and medium-sized house removal cardboard boxes for packing and transporting items as well as volunteers to he,p with the effort.

Mr Machnik is in regular contact with the Polish Red Cross in Lublin, a city in the east of Poland close to the Ukraine border, to establish exactly what they need most.

They are currently requesting toiletries and cleaning items such as washing powder and liquids, first aid supplies, over-the-counter medicines, blankets, sleeping bags and disposable tableware.

Mr Machnik said: “Many of us come from overseas or have families and friends scattered across the world, and we know the value of human life and the importance of freedom and democracy, and the awful, stomach-churning feeling of fear when they are threatened.

“What is happening now in Ukraine is simply appalling and we must do all we can to support innocent people and families who are losing their health, homes, communities and even lives.

“We must unite and help them survive and live happy, fulfilling lives once more, and that is what I’m trying to do here.”
