ONE of the world’s most violent sports will take centre stage at the city’s cultural crown.

Eden Court will host some of the UK’s top cagefighters and glamorous “cage angels” at the first ever professional mixed martial arts event to be held in Inverness.

Up and coming city-based fighters are also set to participate in “Caledonian Combat 1” on 21st July — an event which will see combatants square off within the confines of a 20-foot octagonal steel cage.

“We have never done anything like this before and I hope the atmosphere will be great,” said Colin Marr, director of Eden Court, in Bishop’s Road. “But I won’t be getting in the ring, it looks a bit terrifying.”

Empire Theatre will stage up to five hours of contests from 7pm in front of an expected 662 capacity crowd. Instructional seminars on the sport will be held throughout the day at the One Touch Theatre.

“Inverness is ready for this,” said event promoter Gavin Laird, who is set to include some talent from the Fusion MMA Club, based in his Forge Gym at Carse Industrial Estate.

“Eden Court is the right venue because this involves world class people, so we needed a world class venue and Eden Court is the only venue in the Highlands that meets that criteria.”

The main event will see Scotland’s top welterweight Steven Ray face off against veteran professional fighter Stu Barrs of England. It is hoped two shows per year will be held at Eden Court if it is successful.

Tickets are available from the Eden Court box office on: 01463 234 234 or online by clicking here.
