BEREAVED families who have suffered the loss of a baby during pregnancy or stillbirth are being invited to release a butterfly at a poignant ceremony in Inverness.

The mass release will take place at the city’s botanic gardens on July 1.

It is being organised by the Inverness branch of Simpson’s Memory Box Appeal (SiMBA), a support group for parents and families affected by the loss of a baby through stillbirth or miscarriage.

The act of remembrance will take place beside the Tree of Tranquility, a sculpted bronze tree containing more than 200 bronze leaves, each engraved with a baby’s name and date as a permanent reminder for bereaved parents and families.

The special guests will be the Inverness Military Wives Choir. It will be the fifth such event in Inverness since the first one was held in 2013 and is one of 10 held across Scotland this year.

Butterflies must be ordered four weeks before the release to allow the award-winning breeder time to nurture and grow the caterpillars.

SiMBA also supplies memory boxes to over 200 hospitals throughout the UK.

It runs daily online support in private forums for bereaved families and hosts monthly support groups.

It also provides bereavement training for midwives and health professionals.
