A busy footbridge over the River Ness in Inverness city centre is to close for more than two hours tomorrow (21 September 2023) to test the flood defences are working.

Highland Council will be carrying out essential, annual flood defence testing and this will involve closing the Greig Street Bridge between 9am and 11:30am.

The exercise will involve the closure of all the flood gates, including those on the Greig Street Bridge. The bridge will be closed to the public for the duration of the test.

There will also be some brief traffic management on Cromwell Road while operatives close the gates there as part of the testing.

Highland Council has thanked the community in advance for its patience and understanding while this vital testing is being carried out.

The award winning River Ness flood alleviation scheme was completed in 2015 and includes flood walls, embankments and 12 flood gates which are normally kept open to maintain access at key locations.

The scheme protects more than 800 homes and 200 businesses in Inverness.
