A total of 174 passengers hoping to travel from Inverness to Bristol have been delayed for almost 24 hours due to a technical issue.

The Courier was contacted by a wife of one of the passengers to say that yesterday's 5.15pm flight had failed to take off and those affected were forced to stay in local hotels because a suitable replacement aircraft could not be found.

The caller, who wanted to remain anonymous, said it had been hoped they would take off at noon today but, after sitting on board for 90 minutes, they were all told to disembark the aircraft to await a replacement.

An easyJet spokeswoman said: "We can confirm that flight EZY416 from Inverness to Bristol was delayed overnight due to a technical issue on board. Unfortunately it has not been possible to resolve the technical issue and so we are positioning a replacement aircraft to Inverness to operate the flight to Bristol this afternoon.

"We are doing everything possible to minimise the impact of the delay for our customers, providing hotel accommodation and meals for passengers overnight and refreshments in the terminal.

"The safety and wellbeing of our passengers and crew is our highest priority and we would like to thank passengers for their patience and apologise for any inconvenience experienced."
