Coffee shop chain Starbucks in Inverness has stopped customers using their own reuseable cups for fear of passing on coronavirus.

A Starbucks employee, who did not want to be named, said the outlets told staff this morning that handling people's own reusable cups was no longer welcomed – until the threat of Covid-19, a strain of coronavirus was eradicated.

Customers are now given a cardboard cup and lid.

The employee said: "We were all told that we were not to handle people's own mugs and cups in case the disease was spread to us."

A spokeswoman for Starbucks said: "We are actively monitoring the situation and taking precautionary measures to ensure the ongoing wellbeing of our partners [employees] and customers.

"Out of an abundance of caution, we are pausing the use of personal cups or tumblers in our stores across the UK. However, we will continue to honour our 25p discount for anyone who brings in a personal cup."
