A BRIDGE in Inverness will be closed to the public for most of the day during Etape Loch Ness later this month.

Highland Council has confirmed that the Infirmary Bridge will be shut from 5am to 4pm on Sunday, April 23.

The popular pedestrian bridge's weight limit means that it is regularly closed to the public for safety reasons when high volumes of people are anticipated.

Past closures have seen the bridge shut when major outdoor concerts take place in the Bught. It was most recently closed to the public during the Inverness Half Marathon on March 12.

During the closure for Etape Loch Ness people will need to divert either through the Ness Islands or go over the Ness Bridge beneath the castle.

Future closures of the bridge include Sunday, May 14 during the Cancer Research UK Race for Life events, then on May 27 and 28 for The Gathering Event

It will also be closed on July 1 and 2 due to live concerts in Bught Park, on July 15 during the Inverness Highland Games and on July 22 during Highland Pride.

"The bridge requires to be closed during such events in order to protect public safety and prevent serious damage which could be caused to the footbridge if used by large numbers of people during events held on public roads or venues nearby," said a council spokesman. "'Footpath Closed' signs will be installed during closures."
