Bridge of Dava on A939 Grantown-Nairn road is at risk of further collapse
The Bridge of Dava is to remain closed for the foreseeable future after an inspection revealed more of the crossing is at risk of collapsing.
Part of the parapet of the bridge on the A939 road between Nairn and Grantown ‘crumbled’ at the weekend in front of a startled eye witness.
It followed damaged caused when a vehicle struck the side of the bridge on Friday evening.
The closure of the crossing means that longer diversions are having to be made by motorists.
A council spokesperson said: "The bridge was closed until a more detailed inspection of the bridge could be undertaken (after the accident).
Over the weekend, part of the parapet collapsed into the river.
"Council engineers inspected the bridge on Monday to ascertain the extent of the damage to the bridge.
"This found that, in addition to the collapsed section, a further section of the parapet and bridge wall is unstable.
"Council engineers are still scoping out the full extent of the required repairs – further details and the likely duration of the repairs will be issued in due course.
"The road is single track across the bridge and therefore will remain closed until repairs are carried out."
Police Scotland have said that investigations are ongoing.
