Highland Council’s Conservative group has elected a new leader.

Councillor Ruraidh Stewart, who sits in the Skye/Eilean a’ Cheo ward, replaces Helen Crawford who held the role for 18 months.

The Conservative & Unionist Party group confirmed the move this evening, Cllr Stewart thanking group members for their “trust and confidence”

He also praised Cllr Crawford for her 18 months in post, adding: "I appreciate the strong foundation Helen has helped us build. "

As newly elected group leader, Cllr Stewart said he was eager to address the challenges that lie ahead for the council and was committed to promoting transparency, accountability, and effective governance, with “a steadfast focus on improving the quality of life” for residents in the Highland area.

Mary Scanlon, Highland Conservative Association chairwoman, said: “Ruraidh Stewart has gained a reputation on Highland Council for highlighting major issues such as the Corran Ferry in a factual and reasonable manner, focussing on better services for people in Highland rather than scoring political points.

“The Conservatives are fortunate to have Ruraidh holding the SNP/Independent administration to account over spending.”

Councillor Stewart said: "I believe we need a council that will listen to the concerns and priorities of our residents, not just take their council tax to fund vanity projects.

“Unlike this current Independent/SNP administration, I will work to make sure our council delivers on the people's priorities.

“I will continue to speak up for the taxpayers of Highland and press this Council to focus on our local communities and provide value for money.

“I am honoured to have been given the opportunity to lead our team and I am confident that, together with my colleagues, we can continue making positive strides in serving our constituents and building a brighter future for the residents of Highland."
