A GRIEVING sister is walking 200 miles this month in aid of the charity that helped her brother in his final moments.

Sandra Nairne, from Inverness, lost her brother, Peter, last November, after a short battle with a brain tumour and coronavirus.

She wanted to support Highland Hospice as a thank you for everything they did for her brother, choosing to walk as it is something she enjoys and a good challenge.

Initially she aimed to walk 100 miles, but after reaching that target halfway through March, upped it to 200 miles to continue fundraising.

Mr Nairne (42) left behind two children and his partner of 23 years, Fiona.

The family had been happy and expecting to spend the rest of their lives together before Mr Nairne was diagnosed with the incurable and aggressive brain tumour in May last year.

While undergoing treatment for that he contracted coronavirus and was admitted into intensive care with pneumonia.

That is when the family turned to the hospice, which had also cared for their mother 20 years before.

Mr Nairne became the hospice’s first Covid patient and was cared for night and day by the incredible staff.

He improved for a while and went back to home to his family before the damage that Covid had caused sent him back to hospital and then once again to the hospice.

He lost his courageous fight for life on November last year.

Determined to see something positive come out of the tragedy his sister walked 51 miles in the first nine days of her charity challenge, racking up the steps by walking to work a swell as heading out at the weekends with her nephews, friends and her new puppy.

“We all miss him desperately and life will never be the same again,” Ms Nairne said of her brother’s passing.

“I’m doing this challenge in March to raise money for frankly an amazing cause, the Highland Hospice.

“They provided amazing care and comfort to Peter over several months last year and made an incredibly heartbreaking and devastating time that bit easier.

“Please trust me, you really never know when you may need their help, we certainly didn’t expect to again.

“If you could donate anything at all towards the Highland Hospice I would be incredibly grateful.”

So far, her efforts have raised more than £1960 for the charity.
