An online fundraising appeal by the mother of a sick boy from Auldearn has exceeded its target.

Amy Mitchell was hoping to raise £2850 to continue with her son Adam’s medication when she set up a Go Fund Me page – and so far the total raised is more than £3100.

Adam was just six years old in April 2017 when he caught neurological Lyme disease after being bitten by a tick.

He became a shadow of his former self, was unable to keep up at school, suffered facial paralysis, as well as bacterial meningitis, and nerve damage.

Mrs Mitchell initially funded his medical treatment herself but when the money ran out she decided to launch the online appeal.

The estimated total included: £1500 for blood tests, £600 for medication, £340 for telephone appointments, £250 for an appointment in Germany and £160 for further antibiotics.

On her page she said: “I worked as a nurse for the NHS for 15 years and I loved taking care of people. I never imagined my own son would end up so ill that I would need to give up the career I loved and stay home to look after him.”

They spent all of their savings on his treatment and Mrs Mitchell said: “I ran out of money last month and so his treatment will stop when his current medication bottles are empty.

“We are nearly there, I hope he has been treated enough, but the doctor said he most likely needs a few more months.

“In my heart of hearts I know this brilliant doctor is right. Adam is backsliding and I am literally desperate now to finish his treatment.”
