Nairn Book and Arts Festival is looking to recruit a new chairperson.

Alex Williamson has resigned due to business pressures after taking on the role during the pandemic but he is to remain a trustee of the popular event.

Festival creative coordinator Tanera Bryden said: “Alex has done a fantastic job as chairman this past year, bringing new energy to the festival’s programme and new sponsors and partners on board during an extremely challenging and uncertain time.

“Sadly, increasing work commitments have meant he has had to take a reluctant step back, although he will be staying on as a trustee.

“The festival is currently seeking a new chairperson, and we would welcome an approach from anyone who wishes to put themselves forward for this hugely rewarding and interesting role.”

Mr Williamson said: “With a heavy heart I have decided to step down as festival chairman, though I plan to stay on as a trustee for a little while longer.

“While I am sorry to be stepping down, I do so knowing that the festival is in a good position, with a number of new committee members, and has a solid foundation to build for future years, particularly its forthcoming 20th anniversary.

“I also would like to encourage more people to get involved with the festival, whether as a volunteer, committee member, or a trustee – or by becoming a Festival Friend or sponsor for next year.

“Arts and culture are hugely important for our community and can have a lasting impact by making people feel connected, creative and inspired.

“The festival helps raise the town’s profile as a visitor destination, while creating unforgettable experiences like Storm for our young people. We need to see more events and activities like this taking place in Nairn, and all year round.”
