Donkey enclosure, Black Isle Wildlife and Country Park at Drumsmittal near North Kessock.

The inquisitive nature in the eyes of the donkey contrasted against the nonchalant stance of its companion is guaranteed to prompt a smile.

The park closed in October 2017 after Highland Council suspended its public entertainment licence and after more than 130,000 people signed a petition branding it as an “abandoned prison”.

The previous year, it had lost its zoo license following damning inspections and complaints from former staff and visitors.

Heartfelt tributes to 'true professional and gentleman'

This award-winning photograph was captured in happier times by Highland News & Media photographer Gary Anthony.

It forms part of an online retrospective series, Behind The Lens: The Legacy of a Highland news photographer, being run by the Inverness Courier in tribute to Gary who died in August 2023, aged 58.
