The court was told the assault took place in the city centre's Church Street.

A beggar was punched on the head and body by a man who claimed he was owed money by him.

The incident happened in Church Street on March 10 last year, Inverness Sheriff Court heard.

Fiscal depute Naomi Duffy-Welsh told Sheriff Gordon Fleetwood that Derek Rattray (64), of Bruce Park, Inverness, saw the beggar, punched him once on the head and then the body and shouted: "Where is my £40?"

"It appears to be an unprovoked attack," Ms Duffy-Welsh added.

Defending, Willie Young explained: "They were former associates and my client gave him money for some food.

"The individual made a derogatory remark."

Rattray had sentence deferred until June 13 next year for his good behaviour.
