The number three bus service stops at Culloden Battlefield - but not for much longer.

Culloden Battlefield - one of Scotland’s most iconic and historic locations - is to lose its only public transport link with Inverness city centre as the peak tourist season begins.

Stagecoach is axing its existing hourly bus service between the city and the site - which attracts an estimated 200,000 visitors annually - under a shake-up of services across the area. The transport giant cites a lack of passengers to make the service commercially sustainable.

But the decision has provoked condemnation and disappointment from tourism organisations and community leaders as visitors will now be forced to book an organised tour, or take a taxi to reach the location of the last battle fought on British soil on 16th April 1746.

The timing of the changes on 23rd July, just as the main tourist season gets into full swing, has prompted further criticism. They will also impact on staff working at the site which features a visitor centre.

Scottish tourism minister Fergus Ewing, the SNP’s Inverness East, Nairn and Lochaber MSP, vowed to look into the issue.
