A LEADING tourism group is calling on people to help drive forward a successful awards venture.

The Highlands and Islands Tourism Awards (HITA) recognise the best in the business across the region, with winners going on to the national industry Thistle Awards.

The regional awards, established in 2003, have a key role to recognise and celebrate excellence across all sectors.

Now the organisers are looking for three new board members with enthusiasm and a commitment to tourism in the area, which stretches from Shetland to Campbeltown and the Outer Hebrides to the Cairngorms.

Chairman Laurence Young said: “The Highlands and Islands Tourism Awards have gone from strength to strength over the last 20 years. Part of the secret is that they are run by people in the business, for people in the business. The directors are real people with real jobs in Highland tourism – there’s an enthusiasm and a pragmatism about these awards that stands out.

“Highland tourism is renowned for its energy, professionalism and innovation, so it’s unsurprising that the board are looking to appoint new directors with exactly these qualities, folk who bring recognised skills and experience so that the board can represent the wide geography of our lands, as well as the huge diversity of our offerings to visitors.”

The voluntary vacancies have arisen following the retirement of three founding members last year.

Members will be responsible for strategic management of the awards and anybody interested should email info@highland-tourism-awards.co.uk with a CV or profile.
