Attracting new players and funding opportunities will be driving Nairn women’s football club fun day

A Nairn women’s football club will be hosting their first big fundraiser to engage with the local community and attract new players and sponsors.

Nairn St Ninian WRF are welcoming people of all ages to attend their fun day this Sunday at Nairn’s Showfield.

Although their first team has had to withdraw from the Highlands and Islands League this season, the club is hoping to rebuild and strengthen their squad - starting from this first event which will see the support of St Ninian’s JFC on the day.

Founder of Nairn St Ninian WFC and club secretary Deanna Lundie said they hope this will be a great day to connect with the community and an occasion to enhance the link with their “sister team”.

She said: “This is the first time we run a fundraiser of this kind and we are really looking forward to it.

“From when we first started the club in 2016, we have progressed so much and we now have a strong committee behind.“

The club now has a first women’s team for girls and women aged above 16, an under-14 team and Junior U8/10/12. They have also introduced a women’s walking football side for over-40s.

“We hope to attract more players,” Deanna said.

“Women’s football has become more popular in the past years, but this also means that with more clubs around, there is more competition for players.

“We have a good team, we welcome everyone - no matter their experience, not just people who have played before. Of course if someone has experience, that’s brilliant for us.

“We have quite a mixed age group, we are good at including people - obviously some people can feel uncomfortable when joining a new team but we are good at making new friends. It’s not just about football training, you get to know people.

“We are also recruiting new coaches, especially for our Junior teams.”

The day will be an important opportunity for the club to raise its profile, while providing football-related games and other fun activities as well as stalls from local businesses and a mixed friendly to entertain attendees.

Deanna explained: “Getting funding is so important. We just rely on sponsors and any grants we apply for - we don’t get any money from the likes of the SFA so costs for transport, equipment, insurance and kit are all on us.

“We need to make sure that we get enough funding, especially to compete in our league - unfortunately it’s a lot of money and we want to make sure that for women, girls and everyone who wants to play it’s still accessible.“
