A Nairn man who attacked the bar manager of a popular Inverness pub has been ordered to pay his victim £500 in compensation.

Ryan McFarlane (28), of Bridge Street, who admitted the assault and threatening behaviour, was also fined a total of £2375 at Inverness Sheriff Court.

The incident occurred in the King's Highway, in Church Street, on September 6 last year when McFarlane was refused service because of his intoxication.

Fiscal depute Robert Weir told Sheriff Ian Cruickshank: "He picked up a glass of alcohol and threw it at the manager and challenged him to fight.

"He swore at him and took an aggressive stance then he spat on his face before pushing him on the body into display boarding and on to the ground."

Defence solicitor Marc Dickson said: "He has little meaningful recollection of this. He met a friend and had too much to drink. He is subject to spontaneous actions and is impulsive.

"But he has a good job earning £35,000-a-year as an apprentice linesman which will rise to £55,000 when he is qualified. So he could pay a meaningful fine and is happy to pay compensation."

Sheriff Cruickshank told McFarlane, who admitted previous convictions: "This was an unpleasant incident. I have been invited to impose a meaningful financial penalty and it will be meaningful."

McFarlane agreed to pay the penalty at £200-a-month.
