ASSAULTING a policeman resulted in an eight month prison sentence for an Inverness man who has a string of convictions for resisting officers.

John Ryan was jailed at Inverness Sheriff Court on Friday after admitting struggling with the officer in Balloan Road on Thursday evening.

Sheriff Jamie Gilchrist was told police were in the area at about 10pm when they heard the noise of a window opening and someone landing on the ground.

The man ran off and the police chased him. Ryan (42) admitted struggling with PC Sam Leach and trying to hit him on the head and body.

Fiscal depute Laura Ryan said he threw several punches at PC Leach and was eventually restrained by three officers.

None of the officers was injured.

Before sentencing, Sheriff Gilchrist told Ryan he had three convictions for resisting police in the past two years.
