Artists paint a promising picture for arts contest

A COMPETITION created to inspire creativity among amateur artists has been hailed a hit, with plans already being prepared for a repeat event.
The Cromarty Arts Trust held a one-day exhibition on Saturday to showcase all the impressively varied entries received in the 2017 Creative Cromarty Competition that was launched in August last year.
The competition was organised primarily by former Fortrose Academy pupil Joe Inman during his internship with the charitable group last summer. He won the inaugural Caroline Hewat Prize for Art at the Black Isle secondary last year and chose to take up the internship offer, devising and implementing the Creative Cromarty Competition for which he was also a judge.
Joe was delighted to be on hand to present the prizes and certificates to winners on Saturday, before heading back to Robert Gordon University where he is now studying architecture.
The competition was open to amateur artists from across the Black Isle. Participants were invited to submit up to three pieces each on the broad topic of Nature – Land, Sea & Sky in any visual art medium.
Organisers were delighted with the variety of entries from embroidery to woodwork, painting to photography.
A number of local primary schools embraced the competition which meant the exhibition was brimming with colour depictions of nature from children as young as five.
Category winners received beautiful bespoke, hand-carved wooden trophies to retain for a year made by local sculptor, James Flavell.

With so much fantastic artwork submitted from the schools, judges decided to also award certificates to the top three entries from each school. Cromarty Primary – 1 Lucy Kerfoot; 2 Bay Rochford; 3 Christian Whyte. Resolis Primary – 1 Anna McIver; 2 Abby McCallum; 3 Kitty Bentley Cowan. Avoch Primary – 1 Calum Duffy; 2 Rory McLean; 3 Eleanor Horsley.
The competition will run again on a new theme later in the year.
